How to Search Kane County Court Records
The Kane County Circuit Clerk runs the only official public case lookup for the county. Court files for civil, criminal, traffic, family, probate, and small claims matters go through the Kane County Odyssey portal, a Tyler Technologies platform that exposes Smart Search, Search Hearings, and Make Payments from a single dashboard. The portal is free. No account is needed for a basic public case lookup. The portal dashboard also offers a hearing-only search that returns the next court date without opening the full file.
Before starting, gather what you have. A case number from a summons, ticket, citation, or court notice gives the cleanest result. A party name still works, but expect a broader hit list and more guesswork. Illinois circuit case numbers usually pair the filing year, a case type code such as CF, CM, DT, MT, or TR, and a short sequence number. Smart Search accepts all of these inputs in one box.
- Open the public access portal at kanecoportal.co.kane.il.us/portal and click Smart Search from the dashboard.
- Pick a search method. Enter a party name (last, first) or a full case number, then submit.
- Narrow the result list by case type, court location, or filing date if too many hits appear.
- Open a case to read parties, charges, docket entries, hearings, and the financial balance.
- Print or save the docket view; for a stamped certified copy, contact the Kane County Circuit Clerk by phone, mail, or in person.
If a case does not appear, the file may be sealed, restricted by juvenile or adoption rules, or held on older microfilm. Call the Circuit Clerk at 630-232-3413 for an offline file request. The clerk can confirm whether a record exists and how to view it. Staff cannot give legal advice.
The official screenshot of the Kane County public case access portal helps confirm a user is on the right site. The Tyler Odyssey landing page shows the dashboard layout used by the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit.

The tile layout routes users to Smart Search, hearing lookup, and payment, which is the order most people follow when they need a Kane County court record or a court date.
The Kane County Odyssey Public Access Portal
Tyler Odyssey is the case management software used by the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit, and the Kane County public face of that software is the Odyssey Portal. The public dashboard exposes Smart Search, Search Hearings, and Make Payments as separate tiles. Document images and confidential documents may not be available to anonymous users even when the docket itself is visible. Some Tyler portals require a login at the document-view stage; Kane County's public summary stays free.
Smart Search is a single text box. It accepts names, case numbers, citation numbers, attorney names, and other indexed text. The advanced search opens extra filters for case type, location, date range, and party role. Search controls are public-facing. Sealed, impounded, juvenile, adoption, and mental health matters are filtered out by statute and court rule before any result reaches the screen.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes / Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Search | Global search text box | Either Smart Search or a specific field | Used for name, case number, citation, or other indexed text per Tyler configuration |
| Search Hearings | Portal tile / search tool | No | Hearing search from the dashboard; date and participant filters may appear |
| Make Payments | Portal tile | No | Routes to payment lookup; often needs case or citation number and party data |
| Case Number | Text | No | Best for exact matches; format pairs year, case type code, and sequence number |
| Party Name | Text | No | Enter last name, first name or business name depending on portal instruction |
| Attorney / Bar Number | Text | No | Tyler systems may expose an attorney search when public access is enabled |
| Location / Court | Dropdown (advanced) | No | Kane County / Sixteenth Judicial Circuit locations if visible |
| Date Range | Date picker | No | Narrows filings, hearings, or events to a chosen window |
| Case Category / Case Type | Dropdown (advanced) | No | Civil, criminal, traffic, family, probate, juvenile per access level |
| Search | Button | n/a | Runs the selected query |
| Reset / Clear | Button | n/a | Clears the chosen criteria where visible |
The portal dashboard is a useful shortcut when a user only needs a court date. The Odyssey dashboard exposes the Smart Search and hearing lookup tiles without forcing a full case open.

The same dashboard also leads to Make Payments, so a defendant can pay a fine after viewing the docket without opening another site.
Case Number vs. Party Name Searches in Kane County
A case number search is the fastest path to a single Kane County court record. The Illinois circuit case number format pairs the year, a case type code, and a sequence number. Reading the case type code tells a user what kind of file they have before they open it. Knowing the code also keeps the hit list short when only a name is on hand.
Common Kane County case type codes include CF for felony, CM for misdemeanor, DT for DUI, MT for misdemeanor traffic, and TR for ordinary traffic. Other codes show up across civil, family, probate, juvenile, and small claims matters. A ticket or summons usually prints the full case number along the top of the page. If the case number reads with a TR code, the matter is a traffic case in Circuit Court rather than a state driver record.
- CF : felony cases prosecuted as People of the State of Illinois v. defendant.
- CM : misdemeanor cases, often battery, theft, retail theft, or trespass.
- DT : DUI cases handled as a serious criminal-traffic matter.
- MT : misdemeanor traffic charges short of DUI, such as driving on a suspended license.
- TR : ordinary traffic citations, speed, lane, signal, and equipment cases.
A party name search is broader. Smart Search returns every case where the name matches a party, an attorney, or a related person. Common names produce long lists. Use the case type column, the filing date, and the court location to narrow the results. Adding a middle initial or a date range usually cuts the list down fast.
What a Kane County Court Record Shows
An open case in the Kane County Odyssey portal lists party data, docket events, hearings, and financial balances. The exact fields shown depend on the case type and on whether the case is fully open to the public. Below is the field set that a typical Kane County court record displays.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Case Number | Year, case type code (CF, CM, DT, MT, TR, etc.), and sequence number |
| Case Caption | People v. defendant, plaintiff v. defendant, petitioner v. respondent, or estate caption |
| Filing Date | Date the complaint, citation, indictment, or petition was filed |
| Case Type | Civil, criminal, traffic, family, probate, small claims, eviction, or ordinance |
| Status | Open, closed, disposed, transferred, sealed, or pending |
| Court Location | Judicial Center, branch court, juvenile center, or assigned courtroom where public |
| Judicial Officer | Judge or associate judge assigned where public |
| Parties / Attorneys | Names and roles; sealed parties redacted; bar number where exposed |
| Events / Docket Entries | Filings, motions, orders, hearings, judgments, warrants, payments, bond entries |
| Hearings | Date, time, room, type, and judge for each scheduled court date |
| Charges | Offense, class, statute, plea, and disposition in criminal or traffic cases |
| Financials | Fines, costs, restitution, bond, and balance due |
Redactions matter. Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, dates of birth, victim addresses, minor names, and protected health information are filtered out under Illinois court rules. Documents inside a case file may not be available to anonymous portal users even when docket entries are visible. The portal description of a sealed case will read sealed or restricted in place of the parties.
Types of Court Records Available in Kane County
Kane County Circuit Court produces a wide range of case files. Most categories are open. Illinois law restricts juvenile, adoption, and mental health files. Some financial, victim, and minor-related information is also redacted from public docket entries. Reading the case type code on a ticket or notice helps a searcher pick the right path before opening Smart Search.
- Criminal cases : felony, misdemeanor, DUI, domestic battery, and ordinance-criminal cases filed as People v. defendant. See Kane County arrest records.
- Civil cases : lawsuits, contract claims, tort, eviction, small claims, name changes, and post-judgment collection.
- Family cases : divorce, parentage, child support, custody, orders of protection, and adoption (sealed). See Kane County divorce records.
- Probate cases : estates, wills, letters of office, and guardianships handled in the Probate Division. See Kane County probate records.
- Traffic cases : citations, court traffic cases, DUI, and CDL matters with codes such as TR, MT, and DT. See Kane County traffic court records.
- Juvenile cases : delinquency and abuse or neglect matters restricted under the Juvenile Court Act of 1987.
Evictions and small claims usually move faster than ordinary civil cases. Probate calendars can run longer because of creditor notice periods, accountings, and final reports. Juvenile and adoption files are filed under statutory secrecy and will not appear in a public name search. Mental health proceedings live under similar restrictions.
Public Access Laws for Kane County Court Records
Illinois treats court files as presumptively open. The law splits public-record access between FOIA-style requests for administrative records and court-rule access for case files. Court case files sit with the Circuit Clerk under the Clerks of Courts Act, not under ordinary FOIA. The Kane County Clerk handles a separate set of public records for marriage, vital, and election matters. A user who asks the wrong office wastes a request and a fee.
Key Statutes for Kane County Court Records:
5 ILCS 140 : Illinois Freedom of Information Act, the open-records law for public bodies, with timelines, exemptions, and review through the Attorney General's Public Access Counselor.
705 ILCS 35 : Circuit Courts Act, the statute that confirms the Circuit Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction across Illinois.
705 ILCS 105 : Clerks of Courts Act, the law that makes the Circuit Clerk custodian of case files, fees, copies, and dockets.
20 ILCS 2630/5.2 : Criminal Identification Act sealing and expungement section, which controls how qualifying adult records leave public view.
705 ILCS 405 : Juvenile Court Act of 1987, which keeps juvenile delinquency and abuse or neglect files restricted to authorized parties.
A FOIA denial can be reviewed by the Illinois Attorney General's Public Access Counselor or in court. A sealed court-record question is different. A litigant must usually file a court motion citing the statute that allows access. Reading the access rule before paying a request fee saves time and money.
Restricted and Confidential Kane County Court Records
Some Kane County court files never reach a public search. Juvenile delinquency and abuse or neglect records are limited under the Juvenile Court Act to parties, attorneys, agencies, and court-authorized persons. Adoption files are confidential under Illinois law. Mental health proceedings, grand jury materials, and most law-enforcement investigative files are also off-limits to general public inspection.
Sealed and expunged adult criminal records are removed from public portals under 20 ILCS 2630/5.2. The Illinois Criminal Identification Act sets eligibility rules, waiting periods, and the petition procedure. Expungement is the stronger remedy because it removes qualifying records from public and most agency view. Sealing restricts public access but leaves law-enforcement and certain licensing agencies able to see the record. The state expungement service overview walks through the basic eligibility test, and Illinois Legal Aid Online publishes free forms.
To view a sealed file as a third party, the person seeking access usually needs a statute that allows access or a court order. The motion should identify the case, the record sought, the legal basis, and why redaction is not enough. Courts may allow limited inspection, redacted copies, or simply deny access.
Older and Offline Kane County Court Records
Not every Kane County case lives in the Odyssey portal. Older paper files, microfilm, sealed cases, expunged cases, and pre-electronic files often sit in clerk storage. The portal also drops some closed and archived cases out of the public search window over time. A user who cannot find a known case should not assume the file is gone; the file is likely offline.
The Kane County Circuit Clerk handles offline file requests. Call 630-232-3413 first to confirm whether the file still exists and what format it lives in. Microfilm pulls and certified paper copies usually require a written request, the case number, the parties, the year, and a copy fee. Walk-ins are accepted at the courthouse counter during regular business hours, but checking by phone first avoids a wasted trip.
Note: Sealed and expunged records are removed from public access by statute, so the Circuit Clerk cannot release them on a counter request even when paid.
Requesting Certified Copies from the Circuit Clerk
A certified copy is a clerk-stamped copy of a court record. Many legal uses require a certified copy and will not accept a portal printout. Common uses include name change, immigration, employer background, license renewal, real estate, and out-of-state proceedings.
The Kane County Circuit Clerk issues certified copies for civil, criminal, traffic, family, and probate cases. The clerk publishes copy and certified-copy fees on the official site; confirm current amounts before mailing payment. Filing fees in Kane County may be waived for indigent filers who submit an Application for Waiver of Court Fees, but a fee waiver for a new filing does not always waive copy costs. The Kane County Circuit Clerk page reads cic.countyofkane.org.

The Circuit Clerk site links the Odyssey portal, the e-filing process, payment options, and the office's mailing address, so it is the right starting point when a portal search is not enough.
For a faster turn, bring or mail the case number, the full party names, the year, the document title, and a self-addressed stamped envelope. A request that is missing the case number can still be searched, but the clerk will charge a search fee in addition to the copy fee.
Federal Cases Involving Kane County
Some matters tied to Kane County people, businesses, or addresses move through federal court rather than state Circuit Court. Federal civil rights, federal criminal, bankruptcy, and federal appellate filings do not appear in the Kane County Odyssey portal. Searching for a federal case in the local portal will produce no hits even when a person is sure a case exists.
The right federal portal is the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, which covers Kane County and the surrounding northern counties. Federal case access runs through PACER, the national electronic record system. PACER requires a free account; per-page fees apply for document downloads above a small monthly threshold. Bankruptcy cases sit in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and federal appeals reach the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
State-court appeals are different. A Kane County Circuit Court ruling is reviewed by the Illinois Appellate Court, Second District, and then, on rare discretionary review, by the Illinois Supreme Court. Those state appellate dockets sit on the Illinois Courts site, not in the local Odyssey portal.
